Second Sight's Argus II System provides electrical stimulation that bypasses the defunct retinal cells and stimulates remaining viable cells inducing visual perception in individuals with severe to profound RP. Argus II is intended to provide electrical stimulation of the retina to induce visual perception in blind individuals with retinitis pigmentosa and has the capacity to offer life-changing visual capabilities to those currently unable to see anything except, at best, extremely bright lights. The device, called the Argus II Retinal Prosthesis System, was developed by a California-based company called Second Sight Medical Products. The Argus II has been used to restore some level of visual perception to hundreds of individuals with severe retinitis pigmentosa — a disease that affects one in 5,000 people.
